Bandar Seri Begawan, 23 October 2014 - ORGANISATIONS should be aware of cyber threats, and appreciate that better preparedness to face them makes both business and operational sense.
This should be instilled in key decision makers said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ITPSS Sdn Bhd and BruCERT in his speech during the opening ceremony of the Annual Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation –Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) Conference 2014 yesterday.
“There should be an evolutionary process taking place in people’s or organisations’ mindsets,” said Shamsul Bahri Hj Kamis.
The mindset should change from denial to admitting that the threat exists and eventually to appreciating that there is a danger if no preparations are made to prevent the threat.
The CEO said that the degree of preparedness should cover both financial aspects and manpower requirements, especially as there is a shortage of cyber security professionals in most countries today.
“Cybersecurity is not just about technology,” Shamsul Bahri said, while adding that it is about corporate culture, education and awareness.
He said that policies and frameworks must be communicated to employees in a very effective manner and not just formulated, and encouraged the design and implementation of creative awareness and outreach programmes for their stakeholders.
In his speech, he said that from this conference he is looking for a more “real and meaningful” collaborations beyond just Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).
“It is my hope that these opportunities can be converted into actual project executions either on a policy or operational level,” said Shamsul Bahri.
Officiating at the opening ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Acting Chairman of the National Security Council, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof.
Also present yesterday was the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Chairman of Board of ITPSS Sdn Bhd, Dato Paduka Hj Hamdan Hj Abu Bakar, along with senior government officers and staff.
Next year, a joint conference between OIC-CERT and APCERT will be held in Kuala Lumpur for the first time, after both organisation signed an MoU in 2011.
