Muscat – The Information Technology Authority (ITA), represented by Oman Computer Emergency Readiness Team (OCERT), launched the Regional Cyber Security Center for the Arab region at the ITA headquarters in Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) on Sunday.

As per the agreement signed in December 2012 between ITA, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and International Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats (IMPACT) – the cyber-security executing arm of ITU, OCERT was designated to host the regional centre.

The launch ceremony was held under the auspices of H E Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Minister of Commerce and Industry and chairman of ITA, and in the presence of senior ITA officials, Houlin Zhao, deputy secretary-general of ITU, and Datuk Mohammed Noor Amin, chairman of IMPACT.

Dr Salim al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, said the centre will contribute to enhancing e-governance initiatives, in line with the vision and strategies adopted under the e.Oman strategy.

He said, "This regional centre will open opportunities for Arab countries to benefit from the combined knowledge of the sultanate and ITU-IMPACT's technical or procedural services and valuable expertise in the field of cyber security. The centre will provide assistance to Arab countries to establish national cyber-security centres and help them gain international recognition."
