Malaysia To Host OIC Computer Emergency Workshop In October

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (Bernama) — Malaysia will host the third Organisation of the Islamic Conference – Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) Workshop on Oct 28, in conjunction with the CyberSecurity Malaysia Award, Conference and Exhibition (CSM-ACE) 2010.

In a statement here Wednesday, CyberSecurity Malaysia said the two-day workshop was in response to a proposal during the Islamic Development Bank (IDB)'s Board of Governors Annual Meeting in Putrajaya in 2005, to counter cyber security threats faced by OIC member countries.

The first workshop was held for three days in Egypt, beginning Tuesday, to cater to OIC member countries in the Middle East region.

It was conducted by CyberSecurity Malaysia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of Egypt, with support from IDB.

The second workshop will be held in Morocco from June 24 to 25, for member countries within the African region.

CyberSecurity Malaysia represents the country as Chair of the OIC-CERT, which is an affiliated institution of the OIC. It formed the OIC-CERT which currently has 18 OIC countries in its membership.

The statement said that OIC-CERT was tasked with conducting a series of international workshops designed to provide a platform for IT professionals from OIC member nations to interact, share common interests and exchange ideas on cyber security matters.

Meanwhile, CyberSecurity Malaysia chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Azumi Mohamed, at the launch of the first workshop in Cairo yesterday, said the collaboration of CERTs amongst OIC member countries would not only bring advantages to OIC countries but also non-OIC countries worldwide.
